TEST: Drinking water in urban areas is collected from a surface water source (river, lake or springs) or groundwater source (aquifer). The water goes through several processes to clean, treat and store it so it’s safe to drink when it comes out of the tap.
This interactive uses the Hamilton City Council’s drinking water treatment plant as an example of the treatment process. Most urban locations will use similar steps to treat and store their drinking water. There are additional steps not pictured, such as backflow prevention, which stops any water flowing backwards in the treatment process. The water is carefully monitored before it is piped to homes and other locations.
